What We Believe

+ The Gospel

If you were to ask me, what is the Gospel, I would tell you that the gospel is the good news about Jesus. So the better question then is, Who is Jesus?

Just like getting to know any person, the best way to find out who Jesus is, is to learn about what Jesus does. What has Jesus done, and what is he doing now? And why does he do all this? Three questions. What has Jesus done, what is he doing, and why? These three questions will answer the question Who is Jesus and, by proxy, what is the gospel.

Big Picture:  Four words: creation, fall, redemption, and restoration. These four words explain why Jesus came, what Jesus has done, and what Jesus is doing.

Creation: Thousands of years ago God created everything. Matter, laws of physics and logic, and every human being, they all were created by God. When God created the first humans, Adam and Eve, they were perfect, and sinless. God designed them to multiply throughout the earth, care for it, and be blessed by it through creative and innovative use of it, all as worship and while worshiping God.

Fall: But, Adam and Eve disobeyed God. This is called sin. Adam and Eve’s sin corrupted themselves, all of their descendents whom they represented, and the entire creation they stewarded. This pivotal event resulted in all of the evil actions, sickness, decay, environmental catastrophes, and death that we suffer through every see. The just result of such sin, which everyone since Adam is born into and continues in themselves, is death and eternal punishment.

Redemption: But, God had a plan. He made serious, personal promises called covenants with humans to save them ultimately through Jesus. This is why Jesus came. Jesus paid the punishment for sin by suffering on earth as a human, perfectly obeying God’s law and thus being sinless, dying on the cross, and rising again from the dead. In short, you could say that Jesus saved sinners from sin.

Restoration: However, Jesus didn’t stop at the resurrection. Jesus ascended into heaven and is sitting at the right hand of God the Father, these confusing words are straight from the Bible because we don’t know how better to explain it, and from heaven Jesus is continually at work saving people from sin. If you hear the Christian vocabulary words of “kingdom” or “justification” and “sanctification”, these are specific words describing the work Jesus is doing now. Declaring us not-guilty when are sins are credited to Jesus’ account, bringing us into his realm-of-rule together with everyone else, called the church, removing sin from us, slowly, over the course of our lives, and, in the process, reclaiming the corrupted creation that we failed to steward well in the first place.

These four words, Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Restoration are the gospel, for they explain Who Jesus is by answering the questions What has Jesus done, what is he doing now, and why?

We are what you would call a confessional church. We value our theological heritage, after all.
